Hugh Seehorn Munday was born to Richard Munday and Grace Seehorn Munday on June 5, 1937. Being the baby, he always looked up to his older brothers, Dick and Ted. Hugh received his angel wings Saturday, Jan. 30, 2016, having passed away at Grand Strand Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C. He is preceded in death by his mother and father; his brothers, Dick and wife, Mary and Ted and his wife, Shirley; his uncles and aunts.
Hugh is survived by his wife, Phyllis Smith Munday; son, Curtis Munday of Shallotte; Christl Munday Davis (Mike) of Lenoir; a granddaughter, Katrina Munday Alan (Dustin) of Los Angeles; his great-grandson, Kyle Alan; and his brother-in-law and sister in-law, Larry and Leslie Smith. He also is survived by his "adopted" daughter Debbie Kinlaw and "adopted son" Terry Brown; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Hugh and his wife Phyllis had been married for 57 years and have two children, Curtis and Christl. It was a marriage they both celebrated and appreciated, and love always continued to grow.
Hugh was a proud Marine serving from 1955 to 1959 and was a charter member of the Marine Corps League, P.R. Purgason Detachment 1005 in Shallotte. He was a past commandant and served in other areas. He most especially enjoyed his involvement with the Toys for Tots program and the Wounded Warriors at Camp Lejeune. He also served on the committee for the planning and construction of the Veterans Memorial at Sunset Beach.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lenoir where he served on the board, was trustee for several years and was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. He was also a member at Seaside United Methodist Church at Sunset Beach and a member of the Cross Walkers Sunday School Class. He loved both churches and being involved. He felt blessed to have traveled on several building teams from the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church to Haiti, Panama and Puerto Rico.
After several years in the ready-mix concrete business in Lenoir (Goble & Munday Redi-Mix) he became involved as a contractor in residential housing in Lenoir until 1980 when he went to Sunset Beach. also in the construction business. After several years of building, he went into the real estate business serving as a Broker with Century 21, Sunset Realty . He received several outstanding awards while at C-21. He was a volunteer at a thrift shop and supported their endeavors. He was one to help anyone he could and most especially his family.
Hugh was a proud past member of the Lenoir Jaycees where he served in many different areas, was a past president and received the Jaycee of the Year award. Before joining the Jaycees, he was a member of the Lenoir Exchange Club.
A Celebration of Life service was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, at First United Methodist Church of Lenoir. The internment service was in the church columbarium with reception of friends immediately after the service.
A memorial service is scheduled at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Seaside United Methodist Church in Sunset Beach.
